The Games of Loss: BTG Part 2 Chapter 6
By the time Sam finally gets the fire going it's already mid-afternoon. I'm more thirsty than hungry at this point. No matter how much I beg, Sam won't let me go to the lake. He says it's "dangerous", which it probably is, but I need water! Does he not see that? I'm sure he's thirsty too.
"Okay, Sam. If you won't let me go to the lake and get water, why don't you go yourself?" I cross my arms.
"Fine. I will," Sam says with a smirk.
"Fine. Can I come?"
"No," he says flatly.
"Why not?" I ask.
"Like I said, it's dangerous. Besides, you have to stay here and guard our stuff. Oh, and make sure you keep adding bark to the fire

My stomach contracts, followed by a loud gulp. I wonder if he can hear my heart beating in my chest. I know I can. Baboom baboom baboom baboom, it races. Although Levi isn't exactly an enemy, he's not exactly a friend. He may have spoken out against the Capitol, displaying us not as tributes but as human beings, but he's still from District One. He can't be trusted. He has the potential to be a Career. Muscular, large, experienced. He could kill me right here, right now. Then again, he let Sam go. He could've killed him too. But this is different. We're face to face. Plus, he and Sam sat at the same lunch table for a few days.

When I awake, I'm greeted by sunlight and warmth. I'm nuzzled up against Sam, who appears to be sleeping still. I sigh and detach myself from him. At this, he wakes up with a yawn. Unfortunately, I'm still wrapped around him.
"Good morning," he says cheerfully, smiling at our closeness.
I do my best to smile. "Morning." I can't say good morning if it isn't one.
"What's wrong?" He takes my hand in his. I push him away lightly.
"I was just thinking. Don't worry about it," I tell him, sitting up and rubbing my eyes groggily.
"Alright." He sighs, his smile fading. I'm surprised he isn't protesting. Surely he knows I'm lying. "

Sam's POV:
I sigh, looking at Ruby asleep on my shoulder. I guess I'll be taking the first watch. Not that I wouldn't offer to anyway. I scoop her up and carry her into our tent. Surprisingly, she doesn't stir. I wonder if I should wake her for the death recaps. I decide against it, doubting she'll want to know each and every tribute that has died. I don't even want to see it. The anthem plays that proceeds the seal of the Capitol that lights up the night sky, appearing to be floating in mid-air. One by one, the faces of the dead tributes appear in the sky. I watch closely, a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. They go in dist

Ruby's POV:
We never discussed an alliance. We never really discussed anything. That's why I only think of Sam when I hear him scream. Almost to the Cornucopia, I whirl around to see him flailing around in the water, calling for help. He must not know how to swim. As I paddle toward him, I try not to think about how uncomfortable it is to be swimming in these jeans. Ugh. I love swimming. I'm so glad the guys taught me. Tanner is such a good swimmer, while Greg is the best diver I've ever known. Tim is the best teacher, and Jason is the best coach. With their help and support from the others, I was swimming in no time. It's so ni

Sam's POV:
I'm not ready. This whole week, I thought I was ready. I thought I could handle it, fighting to the death on live TV. I thought everything would be fine. I just wouldn't kill anyone and I would hide and stay away from others. I thought I would be able to do it. But I won't. I just know I won't. There are too many people I care about, or Ruby cares about. She seems to like this Levi guy, so I'll make sure to stay away from him. If she likes him, I won't touch him. Besides, the last thing I need is another friend. Everyone in these Games, except maybe a few, could be my friends. I bet if I sat down and talked with ever

I come out of the changing area in the launch room, wearing my outfit for the arena.
"What do you think?" I ask Vitus.
He studies the outfit. Blue jeans, a red plaid shirt with a gray undershirt, and black leather boots that come up to my ankles. The wardrobe reminds me at once of Sam. He wore something almost exactly like this a few days ago. I bet he's thinking the same thing right now.
Vitus helps me into a shiny black jacket and zippers it up for me. "Hmm " He murmurs thoughtfully. "I think you're in good shape. The plaid is pretty thick, although the jacket is thin. I doubt the arena will be hot or cold. And the

I rise into the arena slowly and intake its beauty. The whole thing is just a field of wildflowers with mountains in the background. It's gorgeous, but I know it'll be extremely easy to die, with so much open field and the only protection being the mountains. Still, I can't overlook the glimmering golden Cornucopia filled with supplies, surrounded by pink and yellow and white flowers.
The gong sounds and I run as fast as I can toward the Cornucopia. I don't plan on staying there long, just enough that I can get a weapon and maybe a pack. When I get there, I grab a knife and a black backpack and am just about to make a dash for the moun

"Sam!" I run through the blackness in pursuit of Sam. He jumps into a car and it scurries off before I have a chance to protest. Luckily, another one pulls up just minutes later that I hop into.
When my car has reached the training center, I've lost sight of Sam. Still, I rush into the building, intent on finding him. I figure he must be in his room, so I go there first. Finding it empty, I go to the lounge. It's empty too. Where could he have gone? Confused, I head to the dining hall. He's not there either. The whole building is empty, it seems. Usually I hear tons of noise from the other tributes on different levels. Now that

I stand in the street facing the place the tributes are interviewed each year. I'm nervous, despite what Vitus and Richard told me. I really want to talk to Sam before the interviews, but I can't find him anywhere. I look around for him, but it's hard to see over the flashing lights and Capitol people. Vitus comes up from behind me for one last word of advice.
"Remember what I told you. Be strong. You can be emotional when it's necessary, and feel free to open up to the crowd. Just not too much. You're a sweet girl, with the potential of winning these Games. The crowd will love you. Just don't say anything bad about the Capitol an
